Why do "witches" wear white?

ok so not like that, but its a random question. in every movie, show, book (Joan of Ark, Hunchback of notre dame, etc etc) ever with people convicted of black magic and being a witch they were, well, burned at the stake, and they always wear an outfit white. is it a coincidence, or is there a reason they are killed looking like that?
