Specifics of a youtube partnership?

I understand the basics r a youtube partnership, but when people say you earn money for having advertisements and such on your videos what are the specifics. Is it $5 a day, or per video. Does someone have to click on the ad and go to the site? What are the details which people who have partnerships will not tell us?
